February Running Totals
I missed a week of running due to being sick. Here are my February totals:

Run Distance: 106.11 miles
Run Time: 17:46:17 min

It was the week before the 20th Little Shop of Physics Open House. I should probably post more on that. It was awesome and exhausting and amazing.

January running totals
I'm feeling good and trying to pick up the pace a bit. Also, I've been going out with some running groups from

Run Distance: 131.16 miles
Run Time: 20:27:54 min

Colorado Marathon
Next week beings my official training program for the Colorado Marathon, May 1, 2011 in Fort Collins. It's kind of exciting, but it means I'm going to be doing a lot of running for the next 5 months. This time I'm doing a more aggressive training program, running 5 days a week and including three 20+ mile runs (50 mile weeks) at the peak of the program.

Colorado Fort Collins Marathon -- May 9, 2010 6am MDT
I've been watching this timer count down all year. Holy crap. It's the countdown to the Colorado Marathon.
In other news, I ran the Colorado Marathon! It's was totally awesome. We were bussed up Poudre Canyon (at 4am) past Mishuwaka to a camping area right on the river. Most of the run was down this beautiful canyon. Really an amazing experience. I totally want to do it again! I did pretty well, comfortably beating the 5 hour cutoff that was part of my new years resolution. I finished in 4 hours, 22 minutes, 41 seconds. This works out to right around a 10 minute mile average. (The first half was much faster than the second--probably because I've never run more than 20 miles before). Here are all my stats. They are also online Time: 4:22:41 Pace: 10:01 min/mile Division Place: 29/45 of Men 25-29 Sex Place: 308/487 of Men Overall: 514/1268 Woo!

My students are awesome
I tell me students that they can always present a song or video that relates in some fundamental way to what we are doing in class, and I will give them extra credit. In precalc we have been studying unit circle trigonometry (radians and such). Today one of my students brought in a vegan cake she made that was decorated as a unit circle. It was really cool.

I really like my school, but it's quite the commute. I've applied to a couple of other teaching positions in various locations about Colorado. Depending on what happens with Steph next year, we might move to Denver, in which case I could stay at my current school. It's all pretty up in the air right now.

Little Shop of Physics Open House

The 19th annual Little Shop of Physics open house was lots of fun. We had 6500 people show up to enjoy two rooms of hands-on science, presentations, and workshops.

Here's a shot of my launching toy hamsters to the excited crowd as part of the presentation, "Air in Motion".

So after about a year and a half, my laptop battery is not holding a charge so well (22.5Wh on a 57.7Wh battery). It's not a big deal right now, as it will hold a charge for around an hour, but eventually it's going to die.

Dell sells replacement batteries for like $150, but I only paid like $400 for the laptop. I'm thinking of just selling it on EBay and buying another one. It seems kind of silly since it's working fine, but I figure I can probably get around $200 based on what similar models sell for, so for a little more than the cost of a new battery I can get a new computer.

Maybe I'll wait until April when the new version of Ubuntu Linux (10.04 LTS) comes out. Or maybe I'll try to just buy a knockoff battery and keep my current laptop.

Bad Day

Kay Ryan

Not every day
is a good day
for the elfin tailor.
Some days
the stolen cloth
reveals what it
was made for:
a handsome weskit
or the jerkin
of an elfin sailor.
Other days
the tailor
sees a jacket
in his mind
and sets about
to find the fabric.
But some days
neither the idea
nor the material
presents itself;
and these are
the hard days
for the tailor elf.

I want to go here.

Thanksgiving in California
Steph and I made the great trek out to Los Angeles to see my friends and family for Thanksgiving.

Wednesday, we headed out to the Palisades in the afternoon to see the ocean. We ran into some friendly turkeys who had been rescued (purchased) from a slaughterhouse.

We went up to the bluffs to admire the view and take some pictures.

The down to the beach to enjoy the sunset. There were some dolphins in the water and a family taking photographs on the jetty. I got some great pictures down there.

Thanksgiving Day began with a 6.2 mile run down San Vincente to the beach. Then the cooking began. Here's a shot of Steph making mashed potatoes while mom makes vegan stuffing.

We did not make a vegan entree this year, electing instead to make many vegan sides: mashed potatoes, pumpkin bread, green beans, broccoli and sauteed asparagus with mushrooms. Lots of good food.

We stopped in Thousand Oaks to see grandma Elaine.

Then it was off to Ventura for Thanksgiving at Barbra and Ed's place. Lots of good food and good times. We played ping pong on my old table from college.

Friday we went to Trader Joe's, saw Crislyn and then played ultimate frisbee. I am still a little sore from frisbee, but it was super fun. Dinner with the family was at Fogo de Chao, and then an evening of folk music by John Craigie.

Saturday, Jon, Steph and I met up with Forest, Mark and Buckley and went to the Star Trek Expo in Hollywood. It was pretty neat; there were costumes, props, and sets from all the different Star Trek shows and movies.

Then lunch at Native Foods (thanks for being such a sport and eating at a vegan place, Jon) and back to Colorado.

A quick trip, but lots of fun. Looks like we'll be back in Cali (Santa Cruz, mostly) in December.
